In August 2023, CKPC Voluntary Teaching Group recruited new members. After more than three months of preparation, from 18 to 22 December, 17 members of the group went to Guizhou Province to teach at Gongtuan Mei’e Primary School in Congjiang County.

This was the sixth time that the Volunteer Teaching Group had served the children of Gongtuan Mei’e Primary School.  The Group gave classes on English, sports and arts. And on the last day, they organized game booths for all the children in the school.

In recent years, the school has seen an increase in the number of students from new immigrants from the western part of Congjiang County.  It now has nearly 750 students in 16 classes. CKPC Voluntary Teaching Group members participated in the morning reading class and divided into three groups to concentrate on teaching the third and fourth grades.

There were 28 lessons during the five days of voluntary teaching, including many innovative and special contents, such as making Italian pizza crafts in the art class, representing animals through music, making sand mallet musical instruments with plastic water bottles and green beans, an art painting combining astronomical constellations (“My Starry Sky”), waltz dance integrating sports and culture, and dodge ball with elements of competition, etc. In English lessons, students are motivated through the use of objects in the classroom, fruits and five senses, and classroom games.

The biggest challenge was the large number of students in each class, with most classes having over 40 students, and the fourth grade having close to 60. In order to effectively control the order in the classroom, the Voluntary Teaching Group deployed 5-6 members in each class, and the classroom activities were divided into small groups.

The computers in some of the classrooms were out of order, so the animations and PPTs that had been prepared during the trial lesson could not be used. The group temporarily changed the content into a live version the night before, and finally completed the teaching successfully.

Through the team’s full cooperation and creative activity design, all the children were able to participate. The children from Guizhou were as enthusiastic as ever. In addition to writing letters to the big brothers and sisters, some children even made small handicrafts to give to them. The farewell was filled with reluctance as tears welled up and hands were held, leaving indelible memories for members of Voluntary Teaching Group.

On the last day at school, Master Lau and the Voluntary Teaching Group leaders had a meeting with the school principal. The team leader reported on the achievements of the volunteer teaching, and the principal fully acknowledged the value of the volunteer teaching and looked forward to continuing the volunteer teaching in the next semester. He also encouraged everyone to find ways to take care of special situations, such as lonely children and energetic students.

Every afternoon, the team conducted summary discussion for the day and made adjustments to the teaching arrangements when needed. On the last night, one of the Vice Leaders was promoted to be the 7th Group Leader and two new Vice Leaders were elected. We all look forward to the 7th term to keep up the good work, keep on teaching and keep on making changes!
