Chao Kuang Piu College’s Down Syndrome Buddy Group was established in 2020. Every semester, the group holds a series of cooperative activities with the Macau Down Syndrome Association, with the aim of bringing warmth and companionship to the families with children born with Down syndrome. This semester, the volunteers of the group organized three activities.

In September, the volunteers taught the children and their parents to make snowflake crisps and chocolate cookies, let them experience and learn the steps of making desserts, and finally pack the baked products. The children had a chance to work hands-on and learn to be patient, and all participants experienced the fun of baking together. During the 8th Vegetarian Food Festival, the Association sold the finished products made by the children and the volunteers. The snowflake crisps was a big hit with both the public and the children’s parents.

In October, the volunteers brought interesting, fun and interactive board games to the Association. The games included Body Twister, Card Flip, Stick Stack, etc. The volunteers and the children played together. After each game, the volunteers would invite the children to look at some pictures and tell stories and share their feelings. Through sharing, the children’s ability of expression was cultivated and the volunteers got to know them better. They all had fun.

For the last interaction in this semester in November, the volunteers brought clay materials from the College brand “Nebula Studio” and coffee grounds from “Infinite Coffee”. Under the guidance of the volunteers, the children mixed the clay and coffee grounds, then pinched them into their favorite patterns or shapes, painted them with colors, and finally made them into decorative magnets. This activity not only helped develop the children’s fine motor skills, but also increased everyone’s interest in art creation.

CKPC’s Down Syndrome Buddy Group is looking forward to future cooperation with the Association. Volunteers have already started planning and preparing for next semester’s activities and look forward to sharing more new ideas and interesting activities with the children. The Group also looks forward to cooperation with other College brands in working for the better well-being of the children from the Association.
