In a quiet backstreet in downtown Macau, there is a store called “Zawood”, which displays unique wooden products and furniture. Next to the shop is the workhouse.

In addition to the handicraft experience, CKPC’s Entrepreneurship Series aims to inspire students by allowing them to get to know and understand young entrepreneurs in Macao’s unique industries, and to listen to their stories of entrepreneurship. Before the start of the experience, Dave, the person in charge of Zawood, told the students that because his father and grandfather were both engaged in carpentry, he had learned from the experience and decided to quit his original IT design job to start his entrepreneurial journey. The road to entrepreneurship has not been easy, from the start of business in 2012, Zawood has been operating through the sale of woodworking products. 2017, through the design of unique wood products, the scale of business was expanded, with a part for design and retail stores. In 2020 since the outbreak of the epidemic in Macao, Zawood’s business is getting worse. It was at this time when Dave decided to make changes. In addition to the sale of wood products, he started on hosting woodworking experience workshops, which has become one prominent part of the business today. Dave shared his experience with the students. “Don’t give up especially when you are doing something you are really passionate about. As long as you persevere, God will not treat you too badly and will not let you lose,” he said.

After the sharing, the students started to experience woodworking. The wood used in this workshop was cut from red wine crates. Dave hopes to arouse people’s awareness for environmental protection, and it is also a kind of appreciation for natural materials. The students took about three hours to complete the exquisite and unique toolbox by selecting the wood, cutting and shaping, piercing and nailing, sanding and polishing. In addition to professional woodworking skills, familiarity and experience in using tools, patience and concentration are also essential in making a woodworking craft. Although the process of making a woodwork is tiring, focusing on the craft and entering the world of woodworking allowed the participants to forget their worries for a while and to relax. The moment they saw the finished products, they felt a great sense of achievement and satisfaction. The woodworking workshop was a unique experience for the students, who not only received unique crafts, but also gained insights from the owner’s experience.

Note: Chao Kuang Piu College has also organized other activities on “Getting to know about Entrepreneurship”, such as jewelry making experience and blacksmithing experience, which are popular among students.
