On October 28, 2023, volunteers from the Chao Kuang Piu College (CKPC) participated in a visit to the Fu Hong Society Pou Choi Centre as part of a volunteer activity. The volunteers engaged in various activities, including touring the training workshop and culinary training base at the center, participating in a patchwork scrapbook workshop, and interacting with the trainees, gaining a deeper understanding of the lives and training processes of individuals in mental health recovery.

The activity commenced with the volunteers visiting the training workshop at the Pou Choi Centre, where they witnessed the trainees undergoing training in different fields firsthand. This workshop provided a safe and supportive environment for the trainees to gradually regain confidence and develop practical skills, preparing them for future integration into society.

Next, the volunteers took part in a denim patchwork scrapbook workshop, collaborating with the trainees to create scrapbooks. This workshop not only allowed participants to experience the joy of handicrafts but also facilitated interaction and communication between individuals with and without disabilities. Through these activities, the participants gained a deeper understanding of the efforts and abilities of individuals in mental health recovery.

During the event, the director of the center shared the unique aspects of the Culinary Training Base with the volunteers. The wait staff at the Corner of Portuguese cuisine restaurant within the base consisted of both regular employees and trainees in mental health recovery, all dressed in the same uniform without any differentiation and this design aimed to emphasize the importance of inclusion. Lastly, the participants enjoyed a delicious Portuguese lunch at the Pou Choi Centre’s Corner of Portuguese cuisine restaurant. This not only provided an enjoyable dining experience but also created an opportunity to establish deeper connections with the trainees.

This volunteer activity not only provided a platform for the participants to understand individuals in mental health recovery but further promoted the concept of inclusion. Through active participation and communication, the participants realized the importance of treating everyone equally and providing more support and opportunities to individuals in mental health recovery.
