The University of Macau’s Chao Kuang Piu College Me to We Leadership Adventure Program (MTW) initiated the Community Engagement Project in 2024. In the first phase, MTW collaborated with Escola Dom João Paulino for an outdoor natural science experiential education program for primary school students on March 21-22, 2025.
The MTW team, working alongside school teachers, led sixth-grade students through an immersive outdoor educational experience at the Hac Sa Youth Activity Development Base and Cheoc Van Youth Hostel under the Education and Youth Development Bureau. The program focused on comprehensive learning about Macau’s geological, climatic, and ecological systems, including habitat types, plant functions, and astronomical concepts such as celestial bodies and light pollution.
Beyond meeting basic primary education curriculum requirements, the program strategically aimed to foster students’ interpersonal communication skills, ecological awareness, and appreciation for life. The initiative emphasizes holistic personal development, guiding students to understand intricate interactions between humans and nature.
Outdoor education represents an extension of classroom learning, prioritizing experiential knowledge acquisition through real-world encounters. This approach involves collaborative planning between educational institutions and outdoor education professionals, creating student-centered environmental learning experiences.
The program encompasses multidisciplinary activities integrating exploration, ecological awareness, and environmental protection. Activities include ecological investigations, environmental consciousness raising, nature observations, cultural explorations, and outdoor experiences such as hiking, camping, rock climbing, rope course challenges, and kayaking. By providing immersive, hands-on learning opportunities, the project seeks to cultivate a deeper understanding of environmental sustainability and personal growth among young learners.
