(6) Inspiring Seminar – 西方主流媒體如何利用話語策略來掩蓋他們的偏見 Self and Other: Discursive Strategies of Identity Construction in Western Mainstream Media

對某些人來說，西方主流媒體（MSM）是新聞資訊的可靠來源； 對於其他人來說，這些媒體往往表現出相當大的偏見。 這兩種印像似乎都有一定的優點，部分原因是西方 MSM 採取了一些有效的話語策略來掩蓋他們的偏見，並使他們的報道顯得客觀。 在這篇演講中，我研究了西方 MSM 使用了哪些話語策略來達到這樣的效果。 為了說明這一點，我以MSM最近對西方自我和中國「他者」的建構為例。 對這些策略的認識有助於我們更好地理解媒體在國際關係中的高度政治作用。

For some, Western mainstream media (MSM) are reliable sources of news information; for others, those media outlets often display considerable biases. Both impressions seem to have some merit, partly because Western MSM have deployed some effective discursive strategies to conceal their biases and make their coverage appear objective. In this talk, I examine what discursive strategies have been used in Western MSM to achieve such an effect. To illustrate, I use the MSM’s recent constructions of the Western self and the Chinese ‘Other’ as examples. An awareness of these strategies helps us better understand the highly political role of media in international relations.

(9) Inspiring Seminar – 流行音樂的社會情懷 On pop music and society

聽流行歌有時被看成是膚淺的娛樂，但流行文化其實從來跟社會大環境有密切關係。從流行曲的發展，我們可看到社會文化的變遷。 這次講座聚焦兩個時代（80年代以及近幾年）的廣東歌，一邊聽張國榮、梅艷芳、姜濤及陳卓賢等歌星的歌，一邊討論廣東歌如何反映香港的社會文化及集體情緒。

Listening to pop songs is sometimes regarded as superficial entertainment, but pop culture has always been closely related to the social environment. From the development of pop songs, we can see the changes in society and culture. This seminar focuses on the Cantonese songs of two eras (the 80s and recent years). While listening to the songs of artists such as Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, Keung To and Ian Chan, we will discuss how Cantonese songs reflect Hong Kong’s society, culture and collective sentiments.
