The CKPC Voluntary Teaching Team, after over three months of preparation—including recruiting new members, conducting training and team-building activities, and preparing lesson plans and trial teaching sessions—sent 18 members to Gantuan Mei’e Primary School in Guandong Town, Congjiang County, Guizhou, from May 26 to 30 for a voluntary teaching program. The team consisted of students from Year 1 to Year 4 across various disciplines.

This marked the 9th time the team served the children at Gantuan Mei’e Primary School. The teaching program included English, science, physical education, art, morning reading, and afternoon reading sessions. On the final day, a funfair was organized for all the children.

In recent years, the primary school has enrolled children from new migrant families in western Congjiang County, now totaling 17 classes with nearly 800 students. During the week, all team members took on the role of class teachers during morning reading sessions and focused on teaching grades 3 and 4 students in other times.

Building on the insights from previous year’s program, this year’s science curriculum was greatly enhanced, and a “science roadshow” was conducted for grades 5 and 6 students during lunch breaks. The team used demonstration equipment purchased through fundraising, including microscopes, electrostatic generators, pH test strips, and bulb circuit kits, which greatly mobilized the children.  They eagerly participated in the roadshow and tried hands-on experiments. One grade 5 student even assisted in briefing the roadshow contents after a short training.

Other science activities included oil-water separation and liquid density experiments, DIY water filters, basic music scales and rhythm lessons, English classes incorporating role-play and food-related vocabulary, kite painting, tie-dye art, and PE sessions featuring team competitions in games like handball and dodgeball.  Because of large class sizes, each lesson was conducted by a team of 4-6 members to maintain classroom order effectively.

A highlight of this trip was participating in the school’s Children’s Day celebration. Children dressed in traditional attire of the Dong, Miao, Yao, Zhuang, and Shui ethnic groups performed dances, songs, and fashion shows, offering the team a deep immersion into Guizhou’s multicultural heritage.

Toward the end of the program, the college master, team leader, and deputy leaders held a debrief meeting with the school principal. The team leader summarized the key outcomes of the program, and the principal highly affirmed its value, thanking the team for bringing inspiring teaching and joyful memories to the children.

Each evening, the team held reflection sessions and adjusted teaching and activity arrangements in real time, including rescheduling classes due to the Children’s Day event. At the final debrief, members shared their reflections and takeaways, covering the team’s mission and legacy, the bondage and mutual support among members, and the personal impact of the experience. Finally, one deputy leader was appointed as the 10th team leader, and a new deputy leader was elected. Everyone looks forward to continuing their service to children in Guizhou’s mountainous regions in the future!
