The Chao Kuang Piu College (CKPC) of the University of Macau successfully held the “CKPC Matinee Melodies Concert” on February 4, 2026, in the college dining hall. The event attracted around 100 participants, including University of Macau (UM) faculty, students, and community members. In a relaxed and elegant midday atmosphere, everyone enjoyed a wonderful performance blending Chinese and Western musical elements, adding a festive touch in anticipation of the upcoming Lunar New Year.

Organized by Chao Kuang Piu College, the concert aligns with the University of Macau’s Residential College System’s commitment to whole-person education. It integrates knowledge inside and outside the classroom, combining community living with cultural experiences. Through diverse musical performances, the event provided faculty and students with a serene cultural respite, fostering interaction, artistic appreciation, and relaxation. Specially incorporating Chinese New Year musical themes, the program created a joyful and celebratory mood, conveying blessings and strengthening the sense of belonging and cultural identity among college members. This reflects CKPC’s educational philosophy of “an open mind and a global vision.”

The performers represented a diverse lineup, with many pieces arranged or composed by Macao musician Dr. Kim Kuok Ip. Student performers from the college — Aglice Zhao, Noah Liu, and Jim Chim — demonstrated outstanding talent, balancing academics with artistic passion. Professional musicians from Hong Kong, including the Fantina ensemble (Ms. Lucci Fan, Ms. Angela Tam, and Ms. Christina Kuok), brought their expertise in multi-hand piano playing and have performed at various cultural venues in Hong Kong and Macao.

The concert featured a rich and varied repertoire of eight pieces, lasting approximately one hour, including piano six-hands, saxophone, violin, a cappella vocal ensemble, and fusions of Chinese and Western music. The opening performance was delivered by the Fantina piano trio, presenting Old Shanghai Fantasy — a work that combines Ragtime rhythms and pentatonic scales to weave in classic old songs such as Autumn Memories and Four Seasons Song, evoking nostalgic Shanghai charm. Next, the MCMC college’s MACALLA Vocal Group performed an a cappella version of Memories, incorporating Chiikawa elements and original Chinese lyrics to express the cherishing of friendship and resonance.

Other highlights included Fantina’s Holy, Holy, Holy Variations and the lively Chinese Lunar New Year Medley, the latter featuring well-known festive tunes like Congratulations, The God of Wealth Arrives, and Joyful Year After Year. Cleverly hidden within were snippets from Tchaikovsky’s Waltz of the Flowers, Beethoven’s Ode to Joy, and other classical masterpieces, creating delightful surprises for the audience. Standout duets included Aglice Zhao and Noah Liu’s passionate rendition of the tango classic Por Una Cabeza (One Step Away), with saxophone and piano in dynamic dialogue; Jim Chim with Lucci Fan and Christina Kuok in Joyful (blending jazz style with mages of gressatitude); Aglice Zhao’s solo performance of Glinka’s The Nightingale variations, showcasing Russian folk charm; and Jim Chim with Aglice Zhao in Rachmaninoff’s Zdes’ khorosho, conveying the tranquility of the countryside and reflections on nature.

The event concluded amid warm applause. Participants shared that the midday concert not only helped them relax but also provided artistic nourishment and festive joy amid their busy studies. Chao Kuang Piu College stated that it will continue to organize similar cultural activities to enrich campus life and promote holistic development.

All UM faculty, students, and community members are welcome to stay tuned for upcoming CKPC events and join us in building a vibrant college culture together!
