To promote community inclusion and mutual care, the Down Syndrome Buddy Group of Chao Kuang Piu College, in collaboration with the Macau Down Syndrome Association, held a “Rock Candy Hawthorn Fruit (Bingtanghulu) Making Workshop” on the morning of March 28, 2026. The event used the sweetness and warmth of spring to build a bridge of interaction between young volunteers and individuals with Down syndrome (“Down babies”).
During the event, led by volunteers, the Down babies experienced the entire process of making rock candy hawthorn fruit. Group members divided tasks and worked in batches, guiding the Down babies in washing the fruit, selecting their favorite fruit combinations, and skewering them by hand. Subsequently, everyone boiled sugar syrup using white granulated sugar and evenly coated the fruit skewers with the glossy syrup. After the treats were finished, the Down babies eagerly tasted their own creations and enthusiastically shared their accomplishments and joy, creating a warm and happy atmosphere.
Notably, throughout the activity, members of the Down Syndrome Buddy Group adjusted procedures as needed according to the real-time situation, demonstrating flexibility, adaptability, and teamwork. Through this hands-on experience, the members not only enhanced their sense of social responsibility but also further strengthened their awareness of civic duty.
Looking ahead, the Down Syndrome Buddy Group is already planning a small-scale sports meet to be held on the campus of the University of Macau in April. At that time, Down babies from the Macau Down Syndrome Association will be invited to step onto the UM campus and participate in a wider variety of sports activities, continuing to promote the social values of inclusion and care.
