To promote the spirit of integrity, truth-seeking, and community service, Chao Kuang Piu College has consistently organized volunteer initiatives to engage with the local community. Following last year’s collaboration with City of Dreams Macau for volunteer activities, the college’s volunteer team, led by social workers, visited the Macau Deaf Service Center on February 19. During the visit, participants not only learned basic sign language but also interacted with the center’s members through games and immersive activities. These experiences allowed the volunteers to better understand the communication challenges faced by individuals in the deaf community and gain deeper insight into their lives in a soundless world.
Below are sharings from students who participated in the event:
- ZHANG KENG LAM
The volunteer experience at the Deaf Service Center was unforgettable. We engaged in many meaningful activities, including a simulated café exercise where we wore earplugs to mimic the experience of deaf individuals ordering food using only sign language. The process was challenging, but with the patient guidance of a deaf elderly woman, we successfully placed our orders. This activity made me deeply aware that while hearing impairments limit their ability to communicate through sound, their passion for life and pursuit of beauty remain undiminished. I hope there will be more opportunities like this to raise awareness about communities in need.

I was delighted to visit the Deaf Service Center, where I learned more about deaf culture and hearing assistive devices. The “Journey into Silence” activity allowed me to step into their world and personally experience the daily lives of deaf individuals—an unforgettable moment. Through this event, we hope to inspire greater attention and support for the deaf community.
