CKPC Down Syndrome Buddy Group and Macau Down Syndrome Association have joined hands to provide companionship and care to the children with Down syndrome. Volunteers organized the last activity for this academic year, which was to make yummy finger food with the children and their parents.

Before the start of the activity, the children washed their hands excitedly and gathered around the table to listen to the volunteers’ explanations. Then, they got into small groups and started to make the food. First, they had to weigh the ingredients, then mix and stir. They mixed the ingredients little by little in order to make the smoothest glutinous rice dough. While waiting for the glutinous rice dough to steam, they didn’t take a break and got right to work on the sushi. Volunteers showed the children how to lay the rice on top of the seaweed. The children were very excited to make the sushi themselves. From mixing the sushi vinegar, frying the eggs, and spreading the sauces and ingredients, the children did most of the work. After the sushi was rolled up, they had a taste of the food right away. Volunteers also shared the delicious food and everyone was very satisfied. Next, it was time to make mochi. Everyone put on disposable gloves and took the appropriate amount of glutinous rice dough, kneaded it back and forth and wrapped it with fillings. After being kneaded and shaped, they were put into a bowl filled with chocolate powder to be coated and ready to be enjoyed! The children seemed to be very interested in the sticky and soft objects, and they had a lot of fun as the process was just like playing with clay.

At the end of the activity, the volunteers and the children actively showed off their work and took photos together. The activities in this school year not only raised the volunteers’ awareness of community service, but also cultivated the spirit of dedication and sense of responsibility. Everyone can feel the impact of their actions on the members of the community, so that the disadvantaged groups can feel the care from the society and promote the building of an inclusive society.
